
Why we put our bathroom lamps through the “steam torture test”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, random splashes of water, and temperatures that swing from freezing to scorching in a matter of minutes. If we just boxed up a standard infrared lamp and sent it your way, it wouldn’t last. The seals would give out, the filaments would pop, and you’d have a dead heater in no time. That’s why we put every single unit through a “damp-heat” aging test before they even think about leaving our warehouse.
The battle against moisture
Most of these Heaters use shortwave infrared quartz tubes. Now, quartz is fantastic for pumping out heat, but it has a weakness: the seal where the electrode meets the glass. If that seal is even a tiny bit off, water vapor finds its way in. And the second moisture touches a red-hot filament? It’s game over. Oxidation happens instantly. To stop this, we lock our lamps in a chamber with 95% humidity at 60°C for hundreds of hours. It’s basically a permanent sauna. If a lamp can’t survive that, it has no business being in a real shower.
Dealing with the “stretch”
It isn’t just the water we’re worried about. It’s the cycle. Think about it: the lamp goes from room temperature to hundreds of degrees in a few seconds. Everything expands. Then it cools down and contracts. This puts a massive amount of stress on the gaskets and electrical connectors. We look for something called “creep”—that’s when materials slowly deform because they’re tired of being heated and cooled. We’d much rather find that breaking point in our lab than have you find it in your customer’s ceiling.
The honest trade-off
Here is the thing: making something truly waterproof means it can’t be tiny. To get a seal that actually works, we have to use heavier gaskets and reinforced housings. Does it make the heater a bit bulkier? Yeah. You lose a little bit of that “ultra-sleek” look. But you stop the short circuits. At the end of the day, a failed heater in a wet room is a safety risk. We’ll take a slightly larger footprint over a dangerous product any day. We build them to take a beating so you don’t have to spend your weekends dealing with warranty claims.
