
Why we put our bathroom lamps through a “steam torture test”
Bathrooms are honestly a nightmare for heating elements. One minute it’s bone-dry, and the next, you’ve got 100% humidity filling the room. If a lamp isn’t built to handle that, the seal gives out, moisture hits the filament, and the whole thing pops in a few weeks. We don’t like guessing how long a bulb will last. Instead, we try to break them in the lab first.
The “Damp-Heat” grind
We take every batch of infrared lamps and throw them into a climatic chamber. We crank up the heat, pump in the humidity, and leave them there for hundreds of hours. It’s basically a time machine that simulates years of steamy showers in a fraction of the time. We’re hunting for two things: leaks and peeling. Here’s the thing: a lamp might look perfect and turn on just fine during a quick power test. But after 48 hours of soaking in that damp heat? That’s when the microscopic leaks in the seal show up. Once moisture creeps in, the filament oxidizes and the lamp is toast.
Where things usually go wrong
Most of these lamps use a halogen-filled quartz tube. The seal—where the glass meets the metal pins—is almost always the weakest link. Glass and metal don’t expand at the same rate when they get hot. They push and pull against each other, which can create tiny gaps. During our tests, we watch for “clouding” on the glass or any signs of electrical leakage. Plus, we check the protective coating. If it bubbles or peels because of the humidity, the heat doesn’t spread evenly. You get these “hot spots,” and that’s usually when the tube ruptures.
The trade-off
Being this strict means we scrap more units before they ever leave the factory. It also means we can’t rush the process—you can’t shortcut a 200-hour soak test. But it’s worth it. When you wire these into a ceiling, you want them to just work. You don’t want to be dealing with annoyed customers or replacement calls every six months. We’d rather slow down the factory line a bit than have a lamp blow out the first time someone takes a long, hot shower.
