
Putting Infrared Heaters in Wet Zones Without the Drama
Let’s be honest: putting an infrared heater in a bathroom or a shower area is a bit like playing with fire. Well, technically, it’s playing with 600°C heat. When a tiny, cold drop of water hits a heating element that hot, it doesn’t just evaporate. It creates a massive temperature shock. If you’re using a standard quartz tube, it’ll probably crack right then and there. Not a great look.
Why “Explosion-Proof” Actually Matters
To stop things from shattering, we use a specific kind of explosion-proof quartz glass. It’s designed to be a bit more flexible with temperature swings. It basically absorbs the shock of a water splash instead of just giving up and breaking. Inside the tube, the heating coil has to be dead-center. If it shifts even a little, you get these “hot spots” on the glass. Those spots wear the glass down way faster than they should. We make sure these lamps can handle being turned on and off rapidly without losing their vacuum seal.
Keeping the Electricity Dry
A tough tube is a start, but it isn’t everything. You can’t just stick a lamp in a damp room and hope for the best. You need a housing that actually keeps moisture away from the electrical terminals. We usually lean on high-temperature silicone seals or gaskets at the ends of the lamp to keep things tight. And a quick heads-up on the wiring: don’t skimp here. Shortwave tubes pull a lot of current. If your wire gauge is too thin, the wires will start overheating before the lamp even gets warm. It’s a safety risk you just don’t want.
The Trade-offs
Nothing is perfect. These explosion-proof tubes are tough, but they aren’t bulletproof. If you hit them with something hard, they’ll still break. There’s also a small catch with the waterproof coatings. They protect the lamp, but they also block a tiny bit of the heat. You might notice a 5-10% drop in output compared to a raw, uncoated tube. It’s not a dealbreaker, but you should keep it in mind when you’re figuring out how much heat you actually need for the space.
